287(g): Even the Government Says it’s Broken

Interesting article here, it’s a java magazine so you’ll have to click to pages 34-35.  Bottom line, the federal government is creating a new program; “Secure Communities is going to evolve and eclipse what 287(g) was doing.  In most cases, 287(g) is solely a jail program.”  Julie Myers Wood, Ice’s former Assistant Secretary, stated.

Based on only 63 enforcement entities signing on to 287(g) in the past 13 years (the majority of those being counties), 287(g) doesn’t seem to be much of a government success.  We should instead focus on using the ICE ACCESS and CAP (as we already do) and look for unique ways to apply our code enforcement and zoning to reduce illegal activity.
